法国籍的勒纳尔在2019年到2023年执教沙特队，曾带队在2022世界杯小组赛击败了最终冠军阿根廷。勒纳尔在次年离任并接手法国女足，但在女足世界杯和奥运会均在8强战被淘汰，也就此主动辞职。

该媒体指出，在曼奇尼被解雇后，沙特国家队新帅共有3名人选，但56岁的勒纳尔处于领先，预计将会重返帅位。沙特队在4轮比赛过后1胜2平1负积5分，暂列18强赛C组第3。
